Funny Face Maggie Prescott is a fashion editor and editor of Quality magazine. She’s searching for the next big trend in fashion. She is looking for new styles that are both beautiful and intelligent. Dick Avery, a top fashion photographer, wants models who are able to think just as they appear. The two brainstorm and come up with the idea to utilize a book store located in Greenwich Village as backdrop.

They can find what they are looking for they want in “Embryo Concepts”, which is being managed by the timid shop assistant and amateur philosopher Jo Stockton. Jo thinks that the modeling and fashion industry is nonsense, calling it ” chichi, and a naive approach to self-impressions and economics”. Maggie decides to employ Jo however after the initial shot Jo is locked out to stop her from disrupting Maggie’s take-over of the shop. The team leaves the shop in disarray; Dick stays behind to help clean up and apologizes to Jo, then kisses her impulsively. Jo dismisses him, but her song “How Long has This Been Going On?” shows that she has a romantic itch. What Jo wants above all is to go to Paris and attend the famed Professor Emile Flostre’s lectures on philosophy and empathicalism. When Dick gets back to the darkroom, he notices something in Jo’s face which is fresh and new. It could be ideal for the campaign, giving it “character”, “spirit” and “intelligence”. They contact Jo, pretending they want to buy some of her books. Once she arrives, they try to get her to leave and attempt to trim her hair. She flees to safety, but Dick stays in the darkroom. Jo is convinced by Dick to pose for the magazine when he refers to Paris. Dick sings “Funny Face”.

Jo, Dick, Maggie and Dick will soon be heading to Paris to take photos of iconic landmarks around the city. Jo and Dick can fall in love during the photos. ” He Loves and She Loves”. A night, while Jo is getting ready for a gala, she finds out that Flostre is giving a lecture at a cafe nearby that she is attending. Dick eventually invites Maggie to her home. They have an argument in the gala’s beginning which results in Jo being embarrassed and Maggie getting angry.

Jo is able to meet with Flostre at his house. Maggie and Dick have the ability to gain access to the celebration through some clever planning. They dance or sing impromptu for the Flostre’s followers. They then confront Jo and Flostre. This leads to Dick to trigger Flostre’s fall , and knock him unconscious. Jo demands they leave, but Flostre tries to lure Jo when he turns around. Maggie is stunned by the “idol” behavior and smashes a vase on his head. She then runs away to be before the end of the fashion show. Maggie is trying to get in touch with Dick while she is in Paris. In the final scene of her wedding dress, Jo looks out the window and sees the plane Dick was scheduled to be flying over the city. Jo runs off the runway in tears after realizing that Dick refused to come back to her.

In the meantime, Dick is still at the airport. He meets Flostre and discovers Jo had attacked him. Recognizing how much Jo is concerned, Dick returns to the fashion show, but Jo is nowhere to be located. When Maggie requested Dick to apply the knowledge of empathy Dick anticipates that Jo returns to the church where they’d taken her wearing a wedding gown, and they share their first romantic moment. He spots Jo wearing her wedding dress, beside the small brook on his arrival. They sing ” S Wonderful” together and then hug.
